Under the Weather

"Sotto Tono"

Many thanks to the offer from Movie Sound Company at Evolution Studio, Lake Garda, who are translating and overdubbing Under the Weather for an Italian Blu-Ray release - Sotto Tono.

Logline

Two couples have double-booked a weekend cottage - and when a therapist uses changework techniques to cure anxiety, the ex-military boyfriend is not best pleased.

Mental health is on more and more people's agenda - but what do we really know? This film includes techniques from the world of changework therapy, previously unseen in cinema.

Filmed & recorded by one-person crew over the course of the weekend, this improvised changework drama brings new techniques and ideas to how cinema - and mental health - can be. By removing a crew there is only one agenda in the room - artists working together.

Raindance Article

Brilliant to be invited by Elliot Grove at Raindance to talk about Under the Weather and its innovative approach. Here is my article on No Crew film-making for this global top 10 film website.

Integral Eye Movement Therapy

I really enjoyed this webinar for therapists and practitioners of the remarkable IEMT approach. Under the Weather is the world's first film to feature this highly successful approach that uses eye movements to heal a wide range of mental health issues. Mal is one of the original practitioners of this system.

Preview Screening

The Zoo Cafe hosted the preview screening event in Hull. Previews are wonderful for learning which final tweaks are needed, as you can really feel the room breathe and stretch. This is partly exhilirating and mostly nerve-wracking. The dark room and attentive, seated audience... it is like a performance for the director but unlike theatre you cannot pace or alter for the audience. Useful changes are made afterwards before the movie finally escapes.

"Delicate performances ... startling extraordinary ideas" Matthew Truesmith, director and actor's coach

Gordon Meredith

Taking the role of therapist Will, Gordon is an actor and playwright. His performances include a number of short independent films and features, historical videos and stage plays. He is a successful playwright as well as producing historical theatre shows and comedy shorts which can be seen on Shift Key Theatre’s YouTube channel.

"Meredith in particular does an excellent job, musing and wrestling with many of these issues that affect us all. From my experience very convincing as the central character!" Nick Kemp , international therapist

Mariana Barberá

Playing the neurosurgeon Elena, Mariana's credits includes a brilliant stage role as Sherlock Holmes! A professional actor from Mexico she is based in the UK winning a range of roles including Lupe Lu in The Twilight Radio Show, Mariana in MissCast , Mrs. Bedwin and Nurse in Oliver Twist then Dinner Guest in Sparrow - both directed by Mike Friend. Also She in Leaving, Life and Love and Shakespeare's Spanish Lover in I Am Will - both directed by Richard Avery. Other notable performances include a year-long run playing several characters in the political satire Cabaret-A-Trois .

Anna Whiting

A linguistic lecture and business owner, this is Anna's first performance. Part of Mal's production approach is to play non-actors alongside professionals to ensure a balance of authenticity and drama. Her performance as Katya is a great credit to her openness, creativity and the sense of cognitive reality this film aimed for.

Orhan Tiĉic

This performance as Zlatan marks a return to acting after a 10-year break from his regular British TV appearances. Orhan studied at ArtsEd in London and is a successful web designer and company director.

Michael Cretu

The music for Under the Weather is by Michael Cretu from The Byzantium Connection on Prima Facie Records. He is a friend of Mal's who worked regularly with Mal's partner, jazz singer Lyn Acton and was first choice for composing for the movie. However, the tracks used here were perfect for the mood and intensity Mal was listening for, and kindly offered by Michael and his publishers.

OFFICIAL TRAILER

Promoting a film is hard for me. One of the more creative aspects of the process is editing a trailer. ANd this one doesn't work very well... but at least I can see what needs doing now and where I have gone wrong. Hiring a specialist trailer editor would help! But as a No Crew maker I aim to learn the craft throughout. Sometime I will have another go. Probably when the Blu-Ray is produced.
